Vineyard & Terroir – Piekenierskloof
The grapes are sourced predominantly from dryland bush vine vineyards in the Piekenierskloof region, located in the Citrusdal Mountains about 50 km north of Swartland.
These vineyards were planted in 1987 and grow on oakleaf and sandy loam soils, producing low yields of around 5 tons per hectare. The vines are meticulously farmed to ensure optimal fruit concentration.
The Piekenierskloof plateau sits at around 750 meters above sea level, where warm sunny days and cool nights allow grapes to ripen slowly while preserving freshness and developing layered fruit flavours.
Many of the vineyards in this area are old ungrafted bush vines, which contribute depth and character to the wines of the Piekenierskloof Wine Company.
Winemaking
The grapes are hand-harvested early in the morning to preserve their natural freshness and delicate aromas.
Only the free-run juice is used after gentle pressing. Fermentation begins naturally in stainless steel until approximately 13° Balling, after which selected yeast completes fermentation in third and fourth fill French oak barrels (300L and 500L).
The wine is aged in these barrels for four months, followed by four weeks on the lees, which enhances texture and complexity while maintaining freshness.
