The Chocolate Block 2023

The Chocolate Block 2023 is one of South Africa’s most iconic red blends, showcasing the character, purity and complexity of the Swartland region. Crafted from a carefully selected blend of Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Viognier, this vintage delivers remarkable elegance, concentration and balance.

Product Story

Since 2015, The Chocolate Block has proudly carried the Wine of Origin Swartland designation, reflecting Boekenhoutskloof’s commitment to sourcing and farming the majority of the fruit from its own sustainably managed vineyards.

Today, vineyards such as Porseleinberg, Goldmine and Partnership Vineyard contribute significantly to the final blend, allowing greater control over quality and vineyard expression. The focus remains on purity of fruit, elegance and structure rather than power alone.

The 2023 growing season was challenging, with below-average rainfall and low soil moisture levels resulting in small canopies and naturally low yields. Fortunately, the absence of severe summer heatwaves allowed for slower ripening, lower alcohol levels and excellent natural balance.

The grapes were whole-berry fermented in concrete and stainless steel tanks with spontaneous fermentation and minimal intervention. The wine was then matured for 12 to 14 months in seasoned 225-litre French oak barriques before blending.

Tasting Notes

The nose is rich and expressive with layers of blackberries, blueberries and ripe bramble fruit, complemented by notes of black olive, perfume and earthy spice.

Hints of white pepper and coriander seed add complexity, while the palate reveals juicy dark berries, fresh cherries and classic red liquorice flavours. The wine is medium to full-bodied with a broad yet refined texture, supported by lively acidity and velvety tannins.

Subtle notes of cherry tobacco and exotic spice linger on a long, dry and elegant finish.
