Vineyard & Terroir – Piekenierskloof
The grapes for this rosé come from mature vineyards growing on the slopes of the Piekenierskloof plateau in the Citrusdal Mountains, about 50 kilometers north of Swartland.
One of the vineyard blocks used for this wine is known as the “Baboon Vineyard” (Bobbejaan Blok), named after the baboons that are often seen helping themselves to the grapes during the growing season.
Located at around 750 meters above sea level, the Piekenierskloof plateau benefits from warm sunny days and cool nights. These conditions allow grapes to ripen slowly while maintaining freshness and developing expressive fruit flavours.
Many vineyards in the region consist of ungrafted bush vines planted since the 1960s, which contribute concentration and character to the wines of Piekenierskloof Wine Company.
Winemaking
The grapes are hand-harvested very early in the morning to preserve their natural fruitiness and freshness.
Whole bunches are gently pressed, and only the free-run juice is used. Minimal skin contact ensures the wine maintains its delicate rosé colour and elegant fruit profile.
After settling overnight, fermentation takes place with selected yeast strains under carefully controlled temperatures of 13–14°C, preserving the wine’s vibrant fruit aromas and freshness.
