Meerlust Rubicon 2023

Meerlust Rubicon 2023 is one of South Africa’s most iconic Bordeaux-style red blends. Produced on the historic Meerlust Estate in Stellenbosch, this flagship wine is celebrated for its elegance, complexity and exceptional ageing potential. The 2023 vintage combines concentrated dark fruit, refined structure and remarkable balance, reflecting the unique character of the estate’s diverse terroirs.

Product Story

Rubicon is crafted from fruit grown across four distinctive vineyard sites on the Meerlust Estate, each contributing its own character to the final blend.

The granite soils of Compagniesdrift provide power and structure, while the sandy River Terraces contribute elegance and vibrant fruit. The rocky Quarry vineyards add precision and freshness, and the clay-rich Lowlands deliver silky texture and concentrated black fruit.

Each grape variety was harvested and vinified separately before completing malolactic fermentation in 300-litre French oak barrels. After eight months, the finest components were blended and returned to barrel for a further ten months to harmonise and develop complexity before bottling.

The cool 2023 growing season encouraged slow ripening and excellent phenolic development, resulting in wines with vibrant fruit, balanced acidity and outstanding ageing potential.
