Meerlust Merlot 2023 is a refined Stellenbosch Merlot that beautifully reflects the elegance, balance and ageing potential for which Meerlust Estate is internationally renowned. Crafted from carefully selected vineyard parcels, this wine combines concentrated dark fruit, subtle oak and silky tannins in a classic style.

Product Story

The fruit for this Merlot is sourced from two distinctive terroirs on the historic Meerlust Estate.

The Compagniesdrift vineyards, planted on weathered granite soils, contribute power, structure and rich fruit concentration. The rocky Quarry vineyards, consisting of greywacke and shale, add freshness, precision and vibrant red fruit character.

Each vineyard block was harvested and vinified separately before undergoing malolactic fermentation in 300-litre French oak barrels. After six months, the finest components were selected, blended and returned to barrel for a further 12 months of maturation in French oak, of which 40% was new oak.

The mild, dry growing season and cool ripening period produced wines with excellent fruit purity, balanced acidity and outstanding elegance.

Tasting Notes

Meerlust Merlot 2023 displays a deep ruby-red colour with expressive aromas of ripe black plum, dark cherry and dried herbs.

Layers of dark chocolate and subtle oak spice add complexity, while the palate reveals a concentrated core of dark fruit balanced by lively acidity and refined tannins. The finish is elegant, smooth and persistent, with excellent ageing potential.
